Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra has been well-known outside Siberia for a very long time. It became a cultural wealth of not only the city of Novosibirsk and the Siberian region but of the whole Russia. The orchestra has come a long way creatively and, according to numerous reviews from outstanding musicians, critics and the audience both in the country and abroad, has won a leading place in the hierarchy of symphony orchestras in Russia.
Set up in 1956 and by the People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the National Award of Russia, professor, Arnold Kats and headed by him till his decease in January 2007, the collective received the name “Academic” in 1982. In 2006, the orchestra was awarded the Order of Lomonosov for high achievements in the field of art and in connection with the 50th anniversary. Received the title of laureate of the Philharmonic Prize "Golden Key-2022" for a special contribution to the development of culture and art of the Novosibirsk region and in connection with the 65th anniversary.
The orchestra had tours to big and small cities and towns of our country, participated in numerous international musical festivals: «Russian Winter», «Christmas evenings» (Moscow), «White Nights» (Leningrad), Russian music festival in Vienna, «March days» (Bulgaria), Bernstein music festival (Novosinirsk, Leningrad, Moscow), Festival «Ear» (Erlangen, Germany), Classic music Festival in Cannes (France), Dresden Music festival, «Days of Iberian music» (Spain), Piano Art Festival (France), Vladimir Spivakov festival (Colmar), Shanghai Spring Festival, Festival “Great Names. Great Dates" (to the 200th anniversary of R. Schumann and the 170th anniversary of P.I. Tchaikovsky, Perm); festivals “Stars on Baikal” (Irkutsk) and “Crescendo” (Tyumen) - art director D. Matsuev; festivals of the newspaper "Musical Review", International Christmas Music Festival and "Pokrovskaya Autumn" (Novosibirsk).
One of the most significant creative events in the life of the orchestra is the International Trans-Siberian Art Festival (artistic director Vadim Repin). The first festival was held in the spring of 2014. In the spring 2024, the 11th edition of the festival took place.
The orchestra takes part in the most important musical events of Russia: the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society (Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, 2002), the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg in the project “Heirs of Traditions. A musical offering to the Great City" (Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, 2003).
On 8 June, 2006 the great event that is considered to be one of the most important in the orchestra’s history and became an apotheosis of the jubilee year took place: Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra was honored to take part in the I Festival of World symphony orchestras, dedicated to the state holiday «The Day of Russia». In the unique campaign, held for the first time and organized by the Association of symphony and chamber orchestras of Russia at the Column Hall of the Dom Sojuzov (Moscow), Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of A.Kats performed along with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor Z.Meta), Toskanini Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor L.Maazel), “Academia of St.Martin in the fields” (conductor K.P. Flor), Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France (conductor M.V. Chung). The orchestra performed “Carmen-Suite” by Bizet-Schedrin and the Fifth Symphony by Tchaikovsky. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin was present at the concert.
After the death of Arnold Kats, the artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra was Gintaras Rinkevičius (2007 - 2017), then Thomas Sanderling, who resigned in March 2022, replaced him. In September 2022, Dimitris Botinis became the artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra.
The orchestra's repertoire is wide and rich with works by domestic and foreign classics and contemporary composers. Regular activities are developing in Russia and abroad.
The tradition of concerts in Moscow and St. Petersburg continues, which began in the very first years of the formation of the orchestra.
In 2016, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the orchestra performed at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater (St. Petersburg, conductor G. Rinkevičius); in 2021, important concert took place in the Zaryadye Concert Hall in a project dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of D. Shostakovich (Moscow, conductor T. Sanderling); in 2022, the orchestra gave a concert at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (conductor F. Korobov), playing a historical program - it was performed in Novosibirsk at the first concert of the first season.
On February 28, 2023, the orchestra under the baton of artistic director and chief conductor Dimitris Botinis performed Mahler’s Ninth Symphony at the Zaryadye Concert Hall.
On May 25 and 26, 2023, the orchestra concerts under the direction of Dimitris Botinis performed in St. Petersburg. 25.05, at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater: Mahler - Symphony No.9 and Bruch - Concerto No.1 for violin and orchestra (soloist Vadim Repin); 26.05, at the State Academic Chapel, Rachmaninov - Concerto No. 3 for piano and orchestra (soloist German Ukolov), works by Tchaikovsky (Vadim Repin), Tchaikovsky - excerpts from ballet "The Nutcracker". The concerts took place as part of the "Days of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region in St. Petersburg."
In November 2023, the orchestra under the direction of the Maestro Botinis toured in Tikhvin, Veliky Novgorod and Pskov. The program included Rachmaninov - Concerto No. 3 (soloist Alexander Klyuchko) (Russia celebrates the Year of Rachmaninov) and Brahms - Symphony No. 4.
On May 23 and 25, 2024, the orchestra led by Dimitris Botinis performed two concerts in the frames of the project “Days of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region in the Republic of Belarus”. The first concert took place at the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater. It started with an overture to Glinka's opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila”. The orchestra then accompanied the soloists. Second concert took place in the Concert Hall of the Belarusian State Philharmonic and was devoted to Sergey Rachmaninov. In the program: symphonic poem “Isle of the Dead”, Piano Concerto №4 performed by the soloist of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society, laureate of all-Russian and international competitions German Ukolov, and “Symphonic Dances”.
In the 2023/24 season, Dimitris Botinis presented a new subscription to the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra: Chief’s Subscription, four concerts.
