Svetlana Zakharova, People’s Artist of Russia and laureate of the Russian State Prize, is one of the most distinguished ballerinas of our time. Born in Lutsk (Ukraine), she underwent her training at the Kiev Choreographic School and at the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg. On graduation in 1996, she was admitted to the Mariinsky Theatre and immediately cast in many leading roles. Her promotion to principal dancer followed a mere year later. For the next seven years it was the legendary Olga Moiseyeva who prepared the bulk of the company’s repertoire with her. Since 2003 Svetlana has been a principal with the Bolshoi Ballet. Here, she rehearses her roles with Ludmila Semenyaka, the former generation’s star ballerina. In addition, Svetlana dances as a guest-star with leading ballet companies such as the New York City Ballet, ABT, the English National Ballet and the companies of Paris Opera, Rome Opera and the Vienna State Opera. In 2008 she became the only foreign dancer to be elevated to “Etoile” of La Scala’s Ballet, Milan. She has received numerous international awards and honours and is president of a charity foundation for the support of the development of the art of ballet.
